Sight words, otherwise known as LIGHTNING WORDS, are a fun way to teach
common words that good readers learn to recognize instantly-in a FLASH!
Sight word memorization is taught in the classroom because:
1. Most of them are difficult to sound out.
2. Recognizing sight words instantly –in a flash like lightning, allows the reader to focus on reading comprehension rather than decoding (sounding out) words.
We encourage you to make your child a set of lightning word flashcards to practice with at
home. You may write the words or print them on the computer to cut and paste on to 3x5
index cards. Our suggestion is to write/print words in lowercase and then the same word beginning with a capital letter on the back. Start with five words,
as your child learns them add five more at a time.
