Students should be reading SOMETHING every night. We also love it when you read to your child (and you know they love it even more!), so if there's a book that's too difficult for them right now, by all means read it to them :) They may take AR tests on those too! Our goal is that all will LOVE TO READ! Please remember that 2nd grade goal is to get 2 AR points per week. We have time for silent reading in the classroom each day, so please help your child remember to bring his/her book back daily. I also encourage them to take AR tests as they finish each book.
If your child needs practice every night with spelling words, try to make it a fun activity where they don't really realize they're writing them over and over. For example; use a dry erase board and markers. Have them write on a chalkboard. Cook some noodles and see if they can spell their words with noodles! Or in the bath, use shaving cream on the wall and have them write their words in the shaving cream. You can also use refrigerator magnets, or Wiki Stix (waxy thread...kind of). We also make bubble letters, or put stars at the tips of our letters, or write the vowels one color and the consonants another. ANYTHING to be different! :)
