My name is Shawn Cullins, and I am honored to serve as a Special Education teacher at Jim Ned High School. As I begin my ninth year at Jim Ned and my twenty-first year in education, I remain deeply committed to the belief that every student possesses unique strengths, potential, and opportunities for growth.

I graduated from Plains High School before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from Angelo State University. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of teaching and coaching at Grape Creek High School, Brownwood High School, Early High School, and Clyde High School. Each experience has shaped my educational philosophy and reinforced the importance of building meaningful relationships, maintaining high expectations, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

My wife, Delia, and I have been married for 24 years. She serves as a Vice President at TexasBank in Brownwood. Together, we have two sons, Jacob and Jared, both graduates of Angelo State University. Family has always been the foundation of our lives and serves as a constant reminder of the value of investing in others.

Jim Ned is more than a school district—it is a community built on tradition, character, and a shared commitment to excellence. It is a privilege to work alongside dedicated educators, supportive families, and exceptional students. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a district that continually strives to prepare students not only for academic success, but also for meaningful and productive lives beyond the classroom.

Course Grading Policy

Student grades will be determined using the following weighted categories:

Category Weight
Major Tests 35%
Major Quizzes 35%
Daily Assignments, Homework, Bell Ringers, and Classwork 30%

Students are expected to complete all assignments to the best of their ability and submit work by the designated deadlines.

Classroom Expectations

To maintain a productive and respectful learning environment, students are expected to adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Come Prepared

Students should bring all required materials to class each day, including notebooks, pencils, and any other assigned supplies. Classroom calculators will be available for student use. For students who wish to have a calculator at home, a TI-Nspire calculator is recommended.

2. Be Punctual

Students are expected to be seated and ready to begin class when the bell rings. Students arriving after the bell may be marked tardy and may be subject to disciplinary consequences in accordance with campus policies.

3. Show Respect

Students are expected to demonstrate courtesy, respect, and consideration toward teachers, staff, and fellow students at all times. All students must follow the Jim Ned CISD Student Code of Conduct.

4. Maintain Academic Integrity

Students are expected to complete their own work unless otherwise directed by the teacher. Any form of cheating, plagiarism, or academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action and/or a grade penalty.

Hall Pass Procedures

Students may leave the classroom when:

  • Requested by the office
  • Experiencing illness or a medical need

For all other reasons (restroom, locker, water fountain, etc.), students must utilize their assigned hall pass. Hall passes may only be used before or after direct instruction and will not be issued during lessons except in emergency situations.

Attendance and Make-Up Work

In accordance with school policy, students who are absent will be provided opportunities to complete missed assignments and assessments.

Students are responsible for:

  • Obtaining all missed assignments and instructional materials
  • Completing make-up work within the timeline established by the teacher
  • Checking posted lesson plans and classroom resources following an absence

Failure to complete make-up work within the agreed-upon timeframe may result in a grade of zero for the assignment.

Students may obtain missed assignments from the designated make-up work area and are encouraged to communicate with the teacher promptly upon returning to school.

Attitude and Work Habits

Success in this course is strongly influenced by a student's attitude, effort, and work habits. Students are expected to:

  • Maintain a positive attitude toward learning
  • Follow teacher directions promptly
  • Participate actively in class activities
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Demonstrate responsibility and self-discipline

Profanity, inappropriate language, and disruptive behavior are prohibited and will be addressed according to campus expectations.

Final Thoughts

I am excited about the opportunity to work with each of you this school year. By working together and maintaining high expectations, we can create a positive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or need assistance throughout the year.

Let's make this a successful and rewarding year!

Homework, Assessments, and Academic Integrity

To promote accuracy, organization, and effective problem-solving skills, all homework assignments, quizzes, tests, and classroom assessments must be completed in pencil unless otherwise directed by the teacher.

Students are required to show all work on mathematical problems in order to receive credit. Answers submitted without supporting work may receive partial credit or no credit, even if the final answer is correct.

Assignments submitted after the due date will receive a maximum grade of 50%, unless prior arrangements have been approved by the teacher in accordance with school policies.

Academic integrity is an essential component of student success. Students are expected to complete and submit their own work. Copying, sharing, or allowing another student to copy work is considered academic dishonesty and will result in a grade of zero for all students involved, in addition to any disciplinary consequences outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.

Grading Policy

Student grades are calculated using the following weighted categories:

Assessment Category Percentage
Daily Assignments, Classwork, and Homework 30%
Quizzes 35%
Major Tests and Assessments 35%

Grades are intended to reflect each student's mastery of course objectives and academic progress throughout the grading period. Students are encouraged to complete all assignments and assessments to the best of their ability and submit work by established deadlines.
