Mr. Harrell’s Class / ALGEBRA I
Algebra is a more rigorous class with a heavier workload and a quicker pace than the 8th grade math class. We strongly suggest that to be in Algebra you have a 7th grade TAKS score that was “Mastery” level, at least an 85 average in 7th grade Advanced Math and/or a teacher recommendation. To maintain placement in Algebra, a student must maintain an 85 average. If the student’s average falls below 85, a parent conference needs to occur to maintain placement in the Algebra class. A schedule change may occur if deemed most appropriate for the student. A student is encouraged to work hard and remain in an advanced class after registration, however if needed a student may request a schedule change to the 8th grade math class only within the first six weeks.
Supplies:
3-ring binder (a small 1" binder will do) w/ notebook paper and graph paper
Pencils (all work will be done in pencil)
Red pens or red pencils (all student graded work will be graded in red)
One box of Kleenex
It is recommended that you buy a TI-84 calculator. You will use this calculator the next 4 years and then some! IF you cannot purchase your own, you may check out a TI-83 to use.
Grading System:
Homework/Homework Quiz 50%
Tests 50%
**Students may retake any failing test grade and raise that grade to a passing grade of 70. They will have up until the date that we take the next test to complete a retake.
**Late work will not be accepted. However, the lowest non-test grade will be dropped.
**It is the responsibility of the student to get all work due for a school absence and complete it in a timely fashion. Students will have as many days as they were absent to complete missing work. Missing work that is not turned in is averaged as a zero. IF you are checking your grades online, a missing grade will show up as an "M", but is averaged as a 0 until it is turned in.
Textbooks:
Each student will be issued a textbook for class use. If you lose it or damage it you will be charged.
There is also an online version of your textbook that is best accessed using “ClassLink” on the school webpage. There are also instructions on the teacher webpage. See me if you need any help.
Tutorials:
If students need help, tutoring is available before school from 7:30 to 8:00.
Classroom Expectations:
Everyday students are to act in a way that allows all students to learn and the teacher to teach at all times. Students should be respectful and kind to all others in the room at all times. Please be familiar with the dress code and dress appropriately everyday. There will be no food and drinks in the classroom other than water in a clear bottle. You should be on time everyday. Leave cell phones turned off and/or in your locker. The Jim Ned Middle School discipline plan is in the student code of conduct for you and your student to be familiar with. You can also defer to the code of conduct for information not on this sheet.
IF you cannot do what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it and how you are supposed to do it, you may be moved to a new seat and/or assigned morning detention. Detention will be assigned if you are tardy, not in dress code, have any food and drink other than a clear water bottle, or violation of school cell phone policy...(turn them off and put them up!) . After the third assigned detention within a 6 weeks you will be sent to the office.
