7th Grade Advanced Language Arts

7th grade Advanced Reading Language Arts (RLA) is preparation for Advanced Placement English courses in high school, this curriculum focuses on literary analysis in reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition to what is expected in a regular language arts class, ADV RLA will also be exposed to analytical reading of literature, analytical writing and speaking focusing on tone and style, and using analytical literary vocabulary in both writing and speaking which are key facets to this program that aid in preparing students for success on the Advanced Placement exams in high school. The content of this course will be organized to include the in-depth study of major ideas, problems, and themes that integrate knowledge and systems of thought. The development and application of productive thinking skills through Socratic methods will enable students to reformulate existing knowledge and/or generate new knowledge. Part of the program will allow for the integration of multiple disciplines as they relate to literature. The use of technology is incorporated throughout the year. Students will be given instruction incorporating the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in Language Arts and Reading (7th grade TEKS ).

Classroom Apps that are helpful:

Quizlet: I try to put all of our vocabulary on this app to help students when studying.  My teacher username is MrsLMorgan (no spaces). I recommend that students get their own use name for Quizlet.  It is a great learning/study tool to use now and in the future.

Google Classroom: many assignments will be assigned through Google Classroom.

Ascender Parent Portal;  parents and students can monitor grades with this program.  Go to the school website and find the link under the parent tab.  You will need username and password from the office to log in initially. (This is on the Jim Ned CISD app)

Jim Ned CISD App:  communicates to parents and students about happenings in the district

Assignments:

Assignment due dates will be posted on the assignment whiteboard located at the front of the room. It is the student’s responsibility to get assignments following/before an absence.  Students have one day for each day of absence to turn in work.  When students do not finish their class assignments in class they may take it home and finish it for homework.  Weekly Assignment:
The weekly assignment will be generally over vocabulary and/or grammar, revising and editing concepts. The weekly assignment will be assigned on Monday and due on Friday.  This gives students the opportunity of the length of the week to complete the assignment.  This assignment is usually not given the first week of school or weeks where the student has to take a STAAR test. Students are given a paper copy, however it is also posted on Google Classroom in case students forget or lose a copy they may complete digitally if needed.
Tests: Students will be given tests and quizzes throughout the grading period.  They will be given notice and will usually have a review sheet/notes before a test/quiz.  Students will also be assigned lengthy written assignments that will be a test grade.

RLA Notebooks:

Students will keep an RLA notebook in class.  This will help them keep most of their materials (journal, note, and assignments) in one spot while also working on organization skills.
