7th grade Language Arts

The 7th grade reading language arts (RLA) course is an integrated approach to the study of English, incorporating reading and writing skills. Vocabulary enrichment, word attack skills, prefixes, suffixes, and etymology, as well as word usage, grammar and editing practice are studied in a process writing / response-based reading approach. The writing instruction and assignments allows students to apply their integrated knowledge in a variety of guided experiences. Opportunities to publish their work in a variety of ways give students the chance to vary their audience and point of view. Reading comprehension and analysis are developed through reading response, novel and poetry projects, and short story study. The use of technology is incorporated throughout the year. Students will be given instruction incorporating the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in Language Arts and Reading.(7th grade TEKS ).

Applications that are helpful:

Quizlet: I try to put all of our vocabulary on this app to help students when studying.  My teacher's username is MrsLMorgan (no spaces). I recommend that students get their own user name for Quizlet.  It is a great learning/study tool to use now and in the future.

Google Classroom: many assignments will be assigned through Google Classroom.

Ascender Parent Portal;  parents and students can monitor grades with this program.  Go to the school website and find the link under the parent tab.  You will need a username and password from the office to log in initially. (This is on the Jim Ned CISD app)

Jim Ned CISD App:  communicates to parents and students about happenings in the district

Assignments:

Assignment due dates will be posted on the assignment whiteboard located at the front of the room. It is the student’s responsibility to get assignments following/before an absence.  Students have one day for each day of absence to turn in work.  When students do not finish their class assignments in class they may take it home and finish it for homework.

Weekly Assignment:
The weekly assignment will be generally over vocabulary and/or grammar, revising and editing concepts. The weekly assignment will be assigned on Monday and due on Friday.  This gives students the opportunity of the length of the week to complete the assignment.  This assignment is usually not given the first week of school or weeks where the student has to take a STAAR test. Students are given a paper copy, however it is also posted on Google Classroom in case students forget or lose a copy they may complete digitally if needed.

Tests: Students will be given tests and quizzes throughout the grading period.  They will be given notice and will usually have a review sheet/notes before a test/quiz.  Students will also be assigned lengthy written assignments that will be a test grade.

RLA Notebooks: Students will keep an RLA notebook in class.  This will help them keep most of their materials (journal, note, and assignments) in one spot while also working on organization skills.

AR Point Requirements: Students will need to read daily to earn their AR points.  They will need to read at home as a part of their homework routine.  Students will earn two test grades every grading period.  One grade will be earned by how many points the student has earned, and one grade will be earned by the overall AR test average for the grading period.  Bonus points will be given for every point over 10 points read, but no points will be given after 20 points.  For example, if a student earns 15 AR points he/she will be given a 105 for the AR point grade.  This is one of the only ways a student can earn bonus points in 7th grade Language Arts.
