Subject Information

Fall Semester

Language Arts

We will be getting used to putting our thoughts down on paper the first six weeks.  Ways to practice at home are writing notes and to-do lists.

As fall progresses, we will work on writing complete sentences.  We will learn how to use adjectives when we write.

By November we will be writing stories.

Reading
We will be testing each student to see which Mrs. Mayfield book  (Reading for All Learners books) he/she needs to start on. Your student may reread books read in Kindergarten. That is okay. As a first grader, your child is not only responsible for reading the book, but also for taking a Reading Counts test on it. Please listen to your child read his/her Mayfield book every night.  Readers make Great Readers!

In addition to the individualized instruction of the Mayfield books, we will be enjoying a story each week from our reading series.  Our spelling patterns, grammar lessons and reading strategies come from this story.

Math

This first six weeks is a review of number patterns, like on dice, dominoes and ten frames. This is laying the groundwork for starting addition.  Then we will move on to number fluency: writing numerals correctly and quickly and recognizing sets of numbers.

Use this website to practice number fluency with ten frames. Ten Frame Game

Once we have mastered writing our numbers we will start adding and subtracting.  Look for real life reasons to add, subtract and subtract by comparing.   Go to the Links page for downloadable flash cards.
Social Studies
We will be learning about our world in Social Studies.  We will learn about our community, state, country and world.  Many of our field trips and projects will be tied to our Social Studies and Science units.  Some of our topics include Myself and being a good citizen, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, and Family and our Time Capsules.
In Science, we will be learning about  germs, apples, fall, farm animals, just to name a few.

Spelling Hints

I want your child to be a speller, not just a memorizer, so your child will know 8 of the words,  The other 4 words will be words having vowels pattern we have worked on before, but your child won't know what they are.  We call these mystery words.  You can practice at home by spelling words that rhyme with the words we have now and practicing words that have our previously learned vowel patterns.

There will also be 2 bonus words each week.  These words come from our Social Studies and Science units.  They will be worth 2 points each.  I will sound out each of the mystery words and bonus words.

Ways to Practice Spelling Words

1.  Type them on the computer using a word processor program.

2.  Write them in cornmeal - put a thin layer of cornmeal in a pan and write the words with your finger.

3.  Write them in ketchup - put ketchup in a baggie and seal it.  Lay the bag on the table and write the letters on the bag.  As you press down the ketchup moves leaving a white letter.

4. Do a practice test.  If any words are missed, write them 3 times each.

5.  Draw a picture to go with each word.

6.  Write them in chalk on the driveway or sidewalk.

7.  Write them in the sand or mud with a stick.

8.  Spell them with magnetic letters on the refrigerator.

9.  Cut our letters from the newspaper of magazines to spell each word.

10. Finger paint the words.

11.  Visit Spelling City to practice the words, play a game or take a practice test.

Spring Semester

Language Arts

By spring we are on our way to writing short stories being sure to include a beginning, a middle and an end.  Adjectives help us to paint our picture with words.  We are also trying our hand at simple research projects.

Reading

By spring semester, most of us are ready to start light green Mayfield books.  We are continuing to work towards our individual Reading Counts goals.

Place Value

Our second semester introduces place value. We use this skill in finding patterns to 120 and counting money. Ask your child to read double digit numbers. Ask him/her how many tens in a number and how many ones.
Money
You can begin helping your child to identify the different coins we use. By the end of our money unit, your child should be able to identify the coins and tell their value as well as count change to $1.00. Please practice over Spring Break.

Geometry and Fractions

We will add to our plane shape knowledge by learning about 3-D or space shapes.  We will learn about vertices, edges and faces.

We will learn about equal parts: halves, thirds and fourths.

Time and Measurement

We will learn how to tell time to the hour and half hour using a smart clock.

We will measure using non standard units.

Social Studies

This spring we will learn about Famous Americans and symbols of our country and Texas.

Science

Our spring semester is full of Science - dental and heart health, weather, plants, ocean animals, reptiles and amphibians and insects.
