Jim Ned Students Win First Place in International Competition
“I think this (KC3) was one of the most beneficial things I've done in terms of student engagement to the curriculum in all of the years I've been teaching”. 2010 Educator
Jim Ned High School students, from Tuscola recently won first place in the International KC3 ~ Kids Creating Community Content Videoconferencing Competition, New High School Division. History teacher, Jason Hutt, facilitated the student team comprised of grade 10, 11, and 12th grade students: Ben Avery, Callie Belcher, Daivis Conley, Miranda Vesey, Josh Robinson, Jessa Yarbrough, and David Glover.
The student team was involved in every aspect of the research, creation and broadcast of their original program titled “Buffalo Gap: A Gateway to the Texas Frontier”. Using the school’s videoconferencing the class connected with students in Suffolk, VA as they shared their 45-minute program exploring the rich culture, harrowing danger, and captivating folklore of the Texas frontier. Using today’s 21st Century technology innovations students created short videos during their presentation showing what life was like in a school, a bank, a doctor’s office and a cabin along with other information about the area near the Callahan Divide.
This International competition gathered judges from across the US and United Kingdom to evaluate forty student programs highlighting their research, content knowledge, presentation strategies, audience engagement, student voice and creativity.
The competition is sponsored by TANDBERG (www.tandberg.com/education) and the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (www.cilc.org). CILC is a not-for-profit that supports and advances education through videoconferencing and other collaborative technologies. The KC3 Contest is open to middle and high school teams from around the world engaging students in authentic research based on community topics, presentation skills and technology use.
