In order for students to improve their reading skills they need to be reading 20 minutes a day on their independent level. Students in my class are required to read each evening. If the book is too difficult for your child to read, then you as a parent can buddy read with your child. You and your child can take turns reading each page of the book. If a child stumbles on a word just tell your child the vowel sound so he or she can read the word and move on.

Math Homework

I would like for students to practice their multiplication facts each evening for at least 5 minutes.

All 4th and 5th grade students have been taught a right brain approach to remember their facts. First, I would have your child teach you, the parent, each story they have learned. Brain research shows you will retain 95% of new material learned if you will teach it to someone else. Then, when they get stuck on a certain fact you can say the key word for that story to jog their memory.
