WHAT DOES OUR SCHOOL COUNSELOR DO?
Counseling/Guidance
The counselor works to help students maximize personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set appropriate career goals, and realize their full potential. The counselor coordinates this school-wide effort while providing direct counseling services and individual student planning. Referrals to see the counselor can be initiated by a staff member, a parent, an administrator, or the student.
Consultation
The counselor consults with parents, teachers, administrators and other relevant individuals to enhance their work with students.
Coordination
*The counselor serves as the coordinator for Special Education and 504 referrals as well as At-Risk identification and services.
*The counselor coordinates with school and community personnel to bring together resources for students.
*The counselor coordinates guidance activities, assemblies and guest speakers throughout the school year.
*The counselor coordinates and/or assists in school service projects.
Assessment
The counselor is the campus coordinator for STAAR testing and testing for the Duke Talent Search.
Scheduling
The counselor does all student class scheduling.
Homeless Liaison
The middle school counselor serves as the Homeless Liaison for the Jim Ned school district, coordinating services for those students qualifying for assistance through the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
National Junior Honor Society
The middle school counselor serves as the adviser for the Jim Ned National Junior Honor Society. This organization is open to 7th and 8th grade students who qualify for membership.
