Hello!  My name is Erin Shanks and I teach English II and English II Pre-AP.  This will be my 11th year in Jim Ned and I love it!  I am married and have a daughter at ACU and a son who is a sophomore.  This year, we will focus on expanding our vocabulary, becoming more familiar with novels and plays, as well as increase our grammar skills.  I hope we have a great year.  Please do not hesitate to call me or email with any questions throughout the year.

 

Mrs. Shanks Syllabus Eng. 2 and Pre-AP

*Students will examine the basic grammatical structure of the English language, including but not limited to parts of speech, sentence structure, and usage.

 

*Students will be introduced to elements of the short story genre, and be exposed to many different examples of such stories.  Students will use short stories to analyze literary terms, and become more familiar with literary analysis.

 

*Students will conduct research and become familiar with standard MLA style for composing research papers.

 

*Students will conduct a thorough study of William Shakespeare, including the tragedies of Julius Caesar and Antigone.

 

*Students will receive instructions in novel units and analysis.

 

*Students will participate in projects over said novel units.

 

*Students will receive instruction regarding all standardized testing elements.

 

*Students will participate in individualized reading programs based on their prior knowledge and skill level.

 

Required Supplies:

*Pens and pencils every day.

*3 ring binder

*1 brad pocket folder

*1 spiral notebook

 

Late Work:

Students have 3 days to make up a test or turn in any assignment due to an absence.  I will not remind your student, they must come to me to ask about make up work.

Conference:  7th period

 

Grading Policy:

60% Daily grades—worksheets, journals, participation, written work, etc…

40% Test grades—objective tests, projects, novel tests, essays, etc...

 

Academic Integrity:

 

Any students caught cheating, plagiarizing, or using AI will receive a 0 on the given assignment.  Further action may be required, as stated in school policy.  Cheating includes unauthorized collaboration on individual assignments, copying, or obtaining tests or quizzes from other students.  If the teacher suspects AI, she will ask the student to defend their work using their cited sources and rewriting it in front of her.
